This year I am committed to my growth in every area. Making a commitment like this is not easy, but it is vital to success. Why? Because in order to get the results you so desire, you have to grow into the person who can achieve the results. Growing is uncomfortable, ask any baby or adolescent. Lots of new feelings, new pain, new expectations, and so much more, but growth is also necessary to your success. This is the very reason so many people don't succeed. The comfort zone is nice and comfortable and really hard to get out of. Just as the nest is really cozy for the baby bird. The mother actually has to start making the nest uncomfortable and in some cases even push the baby birds outside of the nest, so they can learn to fly.
Why would a mother be so mean as to push her young one out of the nest? Because out of the comfort zone, is a whole new world of incredible. The mother knows that her young one needs to face conflict, and difficult things to grow. Unfortunately for the human race, physical growth is not optional, but mental growth is completely up to us. In order to grow, you have to have a growth mindset.
A growth mindset is looking at all the change, conflict, and difficult things in your life with the rose colored glasses of "how can this situation help me." If you look at every situation in your life and ask yourself, "What can I learn from this situation.", you are on the right path. Having a growth mindset is learning from every experience.
When you take the first step and change your mindset to that of growth, you will then need to come to the edge of your comfort zone. Everybody's comfort zone is completely different, mine in the business area is video. I absolutely love writing, and actually truly enjoy talking with people. But there is some weird difference between talking with someone in reality and shooting a video. I don't know why but there is. :)
So true story about comfort zones, in November, I was given a homework assignment to make a video for my team explaining our new back office. Yes, we do get homework at our weekly team meeting and club trainings, which I love most times, but not so much this time. I am not the type of person who can just not do homework and be completely fine with it. I always do all my homework to the best of my ability. Yes, I was that weird kid in high school, more on the nerdy side. My response to my homework was jut tears literally. I cried about it for an entire day every time I thought about it, crazy I know. I couldn't just not do it, so after a day of realizing it wasn't going away, I buckled down and did it. And guess what? I actually survived! I still can't stand my voice or my face on the video, but that is okay. It helped my team members and that is what matters.
In planning my year and establishing my goals, I decided that I was going to step outside my comfort zone all year long and have a growth mindset. My first step out of my comfort zone is monthly webinars. My very first webinar will be Tuesday, January 26 @2pm central time.
This webinar will be about the 7 unusual steps to building a successful online business. I will show you step by step what you business needs to succeed online as well as some tools that I use to help automate my business so it literally makes money while I sleep and spend time living my dream lifestyle. Pretty cool right, I think so, and am super excited to share what I know. You can watch the webinar replay here.
How Can You Step Outside the Comfort Zone?
Are you willing to take the challenge and step outside the comfort zone with me? Let's brainstorm some ways that you can do this too.
1. List some different methods that could possibly grow your business or grow you personally?
- Twitter chat
- Facebook messaging
- Learning a new skill
- Teaching a class
- Consistent exercise
- Healthy living
- Public speaking
- Self control
2. In the above list, what task or skill would be most uncomfortable?
I know this sounds crazy, but the one that makes you the most uncomfortable is the one that will grow you the most. You may need to work up to it, but in the end, just take the plunge and give it a try!
The Process of Stepping Out
After you located the activities that make you the most uncomfortable, commit to implement them into your schedule.
The first step you will want to take is researching your uncomfortable activity. What are some tried and true ways to learn and master this new skill. For example, my skill to conquer is video and webinars, so I would research what a good, viral video should include. I would also want to research the best time frame for my videos; how to edit them; and how to add a personal intro.
2. The Trial Run
After you have done your research, set up a trial run. Test your lighting, try out the platform, figure out how to collect emails for your webinar, and go with it. :)
3. In Real Time
Now that you have done a test run and figured out all the bugs, you are ready to get out there and do it! Yes, you will be nervous. It may not even be that great of a first time, but that is okay. You are learning and growing! Congratulations, for making it this far! At this point, there is no room for discouragement. You took a big step that most people would never dare to take, so be proud. It may have been a disaster, but you took the courage to make it happen.
4. Tweak It
After you have had time to relax and breathe again, access how things went. How can you do better next time? What worked really well?
5. Keep Being a Student
After awhile you will get better and better, it will amaze you how far you have come. This is awesome to notice and see your growth, but remember to never stop learning. Always look for someone farther along than you and watch how they do things. Learn from them. It is human nature to grow to a certain point and then feel that we have arrived. This is an extremely detrimental position to be in, please don't let this be you! I was told growing up to be a sponge, soak up as much information as possible all the time and continue to learn.
I can't wait to see where we will be at by the end of the year! Leave me a message in the comments of how you will step out of the comfort zone and let's grow together!
